St Austell grew with china clay. The town sits above the south coast, with the pits, tips and water-filled workings stretching north toward Roche and St Dennis, and the older harbour settlements of Charlestown, Par and Pentewan to the south. Housing follows that history: rows built for clay workers, later council and private estates, and newer development at Carclaze, Holmbush and Tregorrick. A clearance here is as likely to be a terrace with a long rear garden store as a four-bedroom house on an estate road.
